Power Teaching

Each morning the children have a Mathematics and Literacy lesson. These are taught in Power Teaching groups. The Power cycle is explained below:

Modelling: the teacher shows the children what they will be learning that lesson. This lasts a maximum of 5 minutes and the children are active listening only.

Guided practice: the teacher guides the children through the learning using their voice only. The children are doing what they are told to by the teacher.

Partner practice: the children work together in pairs to complete activities which relate to the learning from the modelled and guided parts of the lesson.

Independent application: the children apply the learning from the first three parts of the cycle independently

How is Power teaching different?

· All of the children are taught in groups that are appropriate to their ability not their age. This ensures that all children have learning planned for them that meets their needs and challenges them.

· There is a greater emphasis on children working independently, preparing them for their transition to secondary school.

· In Power Literacy all groups are reading whole books that are challenging for them. They are provided with in depth questions to answer about the text which will help prepare them for SATS questions and develop their comprehension skills.

· Children will stay in their groups for one term. At the end of the term the children will be assessed and then changes will be made to the groups where necessary.

· There is a greater emphasis on the children becoming ‘mini teachers’. The expectations of work output are much higher than they have been previously.

· The children will be taught using this approach by all teachers ensuring that there is consistency of expectations across the school.

The learning behaviour expectations

The children work in table groups for both Power Literacy and Power Maths. They can earn points for their groups by showing different learning behaviours. There is a greater focus across the school on rewarding positive behaviour.

Job done points are awarded when any task is completed. This ensures that the lesson is fast paced.

Active Listening points are awarded when the children are showing that they are listening to the teacher. Their body is turned towards the speaker and they are making eye contact.

Explain and Elaborate points are awarded when the children provide an answer to a question using a full sentence or ambitious vocabulary.

Teach and Support points are awarded when the children are a role model for their team, when they teach and support another member of their team with their learning or they give praise and encouragement to another member of their team.

Everyone Engaged points are awarded when the whole team are giving the learning task their full attention

Wider curriculum

Whole class music, PE and foreign languages are delivered by specialist teachers from the main Academy. History, geography and science lessons are taught over the year which follow the National Curriculum expectations.
