In support of their World War II topic, Year 6 visited Peterborough Museum for a day to live as evacuees from London.
The children took part in a carousel of interactive activities, learning about ‘Make do and mend’, the Home Guard and air raid shelters. The children experienced what it would be like when an air raid warning was raised, putting on their gas masks as quickly as they could, what it would be like to discover an unexploded bomb and how to dispose of it securely and how children that had been evacuated were only allowed to take one toy with them, so making things out of everyday items became a popular way to keep children entertained. In addition, the children talked about rations, the Fire Guard and doing drill.
